With touring teams cancelling left right and center, it was up to the locals to keep the cricket going, down at Cartama Oval. With some help from the Gib lads, some old faces returning and some promising new talent, the stage was set for a competitive intra club game. A change of format for this one, two innings of twenty overs each, with the batting order continuing on to the second innings. The idea being that everyone gets a bat.
Costa del Sol Crusaders won the toss and put Costa Vikings into bat.
Costa Vikings 1st Innings:
The Vikings lost an early wicket, young Jaime Riley striking in his first over. J Standley and J Wild steadied the ship but the going was tough, with a bit of dew still about, slowing the outfield and some sharp fielding, runs were hard to come by, the pair dug in and batted for most of the first innings before hitting out with a few overs to spare. The next few batsmen didn’t really trouble the scorers and the Vikings finished the first innings 115 for 6 off 20.
Crusaders 1st Innings:
The Crusaders started strong, D Nash and J Hazel finding the middle of the bat and the boundary regularly. Zac picked up his first wicket for the club sending Nash on his way and breaking up the settled partnership. The change of bowling brought about a change in pace and the run rate slowed right down, Bruce and Samarth bowling tidy line and length and picking up a wicket each. Bruce removing the well set Hazel with the first of a couple of good catches from R Hatchman.
Skipper Jay brought himself on for an over and wondering what all the fuss was about, took two wickets with it before taking himself off
again. Richard C decided he wasn’t going anywhere and held an end up while Sam did some damage to the bowling figures. The pair carried their bats and got the first innings total up to 123 for 5.
Costa Vikings 2nd Innings
Mark G and Luke kicked off the second innings for the Vikings and piled on the runs in the first few overs, but again it was Jaime Riley with his consistent line and length that got him his man, Mark on his way for a very quick 22. Captain Naz turned to his spinners, Dom with his leg-breaks and googlies, and JK and Hazel with their well-flighted off-spin ripped through the middle order picking up a couple of wickets each. Only J Standley having any real impact on the scoreboard. The Vikings all out for 97 bringing their total to 212 for both innings.
Crusaders 2nd Innings
Vikings opening bowlers Mark G and R Hatchman did well, fast, full and accurate, and Richard C having carried his bat from the first innings didn’t last long, Sam, on the other hand, relished the challenge, fending off the in swinging Yorkers and putting away the odd bad ball, until he took one on the finger and had to retire hurt. (This the correspondent would like to add, Sam is one of the most promising young cricketers he has ever seen and a gentleman to boot).
Dom and Nasir picked up where Sam left off and made light work of the chase, a couple of quick wickets saw a bit of a wobble but Nazir’s crusaders cruised to victory a with a few overs to spare.
